Now the sun was down, there was a slight chill in the air. Farah was beginning to regret not bringing a jacket. Just not enough to volunteer to give Jaelyn a hand with the digging. Her partner was much better suited to the physical stuff than she was.

With Ashley's directions, the graveyard had been easy enough to find. Someone—quite possibly the brunette's mother—had cleaned it up a little within the last few years, although not recently. It had been cleared of the heavy brush that had encroached over the decades when the hotel was in disrepair, but the weeds were mounting a robust re-invasion. Mildred's grave at been right on the edge of the old graveyard, the position odd given that her grandparents, several aunts and uncles, and a cousin who'd died as a child had been given pride of place in the center. It didn't appear her more immediate family had been buried here. They must have made other arrangements after abandoning the hotel. Her simple tombstone was in better shape than most of the others around, although it just bore her name and dates. There'd been a very dead bouquet of flowers lain out on her grave. Probably Jackie again.

Farah's hand shivered slightly as she tried to keep the flashlight steady while Jaelyn's shovel bit through the soil. Down below the surface, the ground was heavy and claylike. Her partner had worked up quite a sweat. Beside Mildred's grave lay a gasoline can and a crowbar. Two other tools of the trade.

She sighed. This was the bit she didn't like. But it really was the meat. She enjoyed the investigation part... trying to piece together what had happened. But with ghosts, it always boiled down to finding the right body and burning the bones. With that mortal connection severed, the specter was usually free to move on.

At least, they had a grave this time. They'd worked a case up in Minneapolis where the deceased had donated his body to science. That had been a bitch to track down. Without her, Farah suspected Jaelyn would still be trying to navigate the medical school bureaucracy.

And, of course, the poltergeist that had slain Greg had required a grueling woodland search and a treacherous descent into an abandoned mine before they'd located that poor boy's body. She still sometimes had nightmares about what they'd found. Jaelyn had told her not to come. But she'd had to know.

Down in Mildred's grave, the shovel thunked against rotting wood. Farah sighed as her partner lifted out the last of the dirt to expose the moldering coffin. She looked up at the heavens and offered a quick plea for forgiveness from any spirits, angels or deities that might be watching.

The crowbar proved unnecessary. The coffin creaked open when Jaelyn tugged on the lid.

“What the hell?” the blonde gasped as she stared inside.

The flashlight shook in Farah's hands as the beam and the silver moonlight both illuminated black and charred bones.

“Did someone beat us to it?” she blurted.
